Before you leave for a big trip it is important to sign up for travelers insurance or expatriate insurance. Travelers insurance is needed when you are taking shorter trip and do not plan on making any regular doctor visits. Expatriate insurance is important to sign up for when you are leaving for a long trip and plan on working and living in a different country for an extended time period. During this time period, you may go to the doctor or dentist for any check ups or annual visits. Expatriate insurance usually lasts for at least 6 months and can be transferred to different countries.
Whether you sign up for travelers or expatriate insurance it is important to check a few things in your policy before you leave. It is important to see if your plan covers any prescribed medicines. This is especially important in expatriate insurance, since you will be away for many months and may need to refill that prescription every month.
It is important to make sure that your policy includes evacuations for any emergency needs. If you will be doing adventurous and somewhat dangerous activities you should double check and search for a policy that includes extreme sports. No one plans for something fatal to happen on a trip but in the case that it does, you want to make sure your policy will return your remains to your country.
Lastly, it is important to know how you are going to pay for your medical expenses. Whether your insurance coverage will pay for your expenses at the time of service or if you have to pay at the time of service and then be reimbursed later by your insurance company. If reimbursement is the case then check to see how long the insurance company has to pay you back.
